How To Prevent Your Computer From Overheating

burning-pc-preventions
An overheating computer spells trouble. You would want your girlfriend to be smoking hot but trust me, neither you want your computer to be smoking, nor hot. Yes, we are talking about computer overheating problem.
The cooling system of the computer comprising of the fan, heat sinks, vents etc. forms one of the most essential components of your device. A malfunctioning one can cause heat to build up inside, thereby damaging and slowly eating up the life of sensitive components such as the motherboard. These days everyone is having overheating problems with their systems, and asking for solutions.
Besides shortening the life span, overheating also causes your PC to slow down and since in the world of computing, the slow and steady only ends up cursing at the screen and raising his hands in utter dismay, I am pretty much sure that you would be keen to avoid that.

Symptoms of PC Overheating:

Overheating-Symptoms

Placing your hand on the computer only to retract it immediately exclaiming “Ouch Hot!! Hot!!! “, sure is one sign that it is overheating. But besides that overheating may cause the system to stop unexpectedly, display random Blue Screen of Death/Protection Fault messages, shutting down or restarting on its own. It may also lead the fan to spin faster to dissipate the heat being generated thereby making it louder and noisy.

Causes and Cures of Overheating:

Ventilation

Just like the radiator of a car prevents the engine from overheating, the computer has been provided with fans and cooling vents to maintain the flow of cool and hot air in the system. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say they function as the lungs of the computer and you really don’t want to be messing around with them. It is the lack of proper ventilation that is a major cause of overheating. To maintain proper ventilation you should:
  • Never place your laptop on a soft surface such as a pillow, a mattress or even your lap as it would sink in and block the vent, which would be a perfect recipe for overheating. Rather try to place it upon a hard, sturdy and flat surface.
  • Try to provide some elevation beneath the laptop. You could probably place a book underneath it or buy a laptop stand (Although I wouldn’t say it is absolutely necessary to buy one. But if you have some extra cash in your pocket, it wouldn’t hurt to buy one). By doing so, you allow a lot more air to flow beneath the laptop leading to efficient dismissal of heat.
  • Ensure clearance of about 4-5 inches around each vent.
  • Also remember never to leave your laptop turned on before placing it in your bag or briefcase. This would cause the heat to accumulate in one place and thus cause the laptop to overheat.

Dust

Overheating-Dust
Dust is the mother of all overheating problems and your enemy number one. Dust and debris clog the air vents therefore impeding the air flow. Accumulation of dust and lint over the fan causes it to work harder and become noisy as a result. A layer of this filth which acts as an insulator, covering other heat generating parts such as the RAM and the Hard Disk can also be a cause of overheating.
  • All you need to do is the little housekeeping (or it turns out, computerkeeping in this case) task of maintaining cleanliness. By using a can of compressed air or a slight damp cloth ensure that air vents are clean. Cleaning can turn out to be quite a tardy task if you own a Desktop PC but it is definitely for the better of your PC. But I would advise readers to be very careful while cleaning and in case you do not feel confident, head over to an expert.

Do check out this video for a tutorial on How To Clean Your PC
So by now I think you too would acknowledge the fact that we can’t ignore the power of even a small speck of dirt, can we?

Environment

Overheating-Environment
Ensuring a cool environment for your laptop can also go a long way in minimizing overheating. Although I wouldn’t recommend that you nominate your device for an Ice Bucket Challenge or arrange an environment such as the one shown in the image, but instead try to use it in a cooler room (say someplace with an air-conditioner). A small drop in temperature might just do the trick. Also, it would be advisable to prevent placing your computer in the periphery of devices which emit hot air right onto it.

Battery

If you want to keep your computer safe from overheating, never overcharge the battery. Most people plug in the chargers of their laptops and keep them plugged in even when the battery is charged to a 100%. Never do so, because not only does it cause overheating but according to some computer experts, it also reduces the battery life.

BIOS

Overheating-BIOS
In order to prevent overheating it is advisable to keep updating your BIOS along with other device drivers. Go to Run > Type msinfo32.exe and check your BIOS Version/Date. In case a newer version is available on the website of your PC manufacturer, go ahead and download it.

PC Settings

Tweaking the power settings of your computer is also an effective solution to overheating. Less power consumption leads to less heat generation.
  • Never set the brightness to maximum.
  • Do not overclock your computer as it makes it hotter.
  • You could also customize the settings of the graphics card of your computer.

A Complete Guide On YouTube Tips and Tricks

youtube-tips-and-tricks
synonymous with YouTube. Think tutorials, music videos, movie trailers, game-plays, gadget reviews YouTube has a Pandora’s Box of videos to provide to everyone’s liking. It has even changed the lives of some people over time, ask PSY or Justin Bieber for that purpose.
The third most visited site on the Internet after Google and Facebook; over the years, YouTube has amassed over 1 billion users with an awe-inspiring 300 hours of videos being uploaded to the site every minute. I find it, perhaps the most productive way of being unproductive and killing time. So how about discovering some YouTube tips and tricks to add a completely new dimension to your YouTube experience.

Common Keyboard Shortcuts:

We begin our YouTube tips and tricks article with the basic keyboard shortcuts which I hope almost everyone will be aware of:
by adsupply
X

Space-Play/Pause
F-Fullscreen
Esc-Exit Fullscreen
-Increase Volume
-Decrease Volume
-Go back 5 Seconds
-Go forward 5 Seconds
In fact you can even skip parts of the video without mouse-clicking on the time slider by simply pressing the number keys on your keyboard. Pressing the 1 key skips 10% of the video, the 2 key skips 20% of the video and so on. Pressing the number 0, takes you back to the start of the video.

Specific Start Time:

This is one handy YouTube trick which allows you to start a video from a specific time instead of having to tell people the specific time where the boring introduction gets over or point to the part of the video where the real fun begins.
Here is how it works. Consider the following YouTube URL:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0pLbTXPHng
Now to jump to a 1:23 in the video just simply add #t01m23s to the link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0pLbTXPHng#t=01m23s

It would look like this:

A dialog box containing the link will be generated. Just copy the link and use it to you like.

Turn any video into a GIF:

The next addition in YouTube tips and tricks articles is my favorite.
Who doesn’t like a funny old GIF! Well good news for you, it is pretty simple to create a GIF out of a YouTube video. All you need to do is add the word ‘gif’ just after the ‘www.’ in the URL.
For example: Consider this YouTube URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9q4qzYrHVmI#
You just have to modify it like this: https://www.gifyoutube.com/watch?v=9q4qzYrHVmI#

It shall redirect you to a page where you can make a GIF as per your required specifications in a matter of minutes. In fact you can even enter captions in your GIF image through this tool.

Repeat The Complete Video or Parts of it Automatically:

There are times when we stumble upon a video which no matter how much we try we can’t resist watching again and again. It could be a music video, a funny prank or perhaps an awe-inspiring stunt scene from some movie. To repeat certain portion of the video or the complete video all you need to do is to add the word ‘repeater’ after ‘youtube’ in the URL.
For example: Consider this YouTube URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6DFLNa6MBA
Just change it to: https://www.youtuberepeater.com/watch?v=D6DFLNa6MBA
It shall redirect you to a page where you can loop the required portions of the video.

YouTube Leanback:

Watching YouTube videos on your TV using the normal YouTube desktop version can be a cumbersome experience. That’s where the YouTube Leanback feature comes in, it is basically a simplified UI version enhanced for TV which recommends videos for you to watch according to those that you have watched before and can be controlled simply using arrow keys.
All you need to do is go to youtube.com/tv , leanback and enjoy the viewing experience.

Ghost: This Technology Literally Comes Out of the Screen

What's This?
project-ghost-display-screen
Touch screen laptops and desktops are soon going to be outdated if a new technology called the GHOST project becomes mainstream. This technology lends you the power to interact with your computer and data in a 3D physical way.
This exciting new technology allows you to change the shape of the display with your own hands and aims to revolutionize the way you interact with your laptops, smartphones and other devices with displays. The GHOST stands for “Generic, Highly-Organic Share-Changing Interfaces”. If this becomes successful, imagine touching the images on your screen and pulling out objects and data to play with them.

Our current displays are flat (or somewhat curved without any purpose) and the GHOST Project wants to change that. This project was launched in January 2013 and is supported by EU.
The GHOST coordinator Professor Kasper Hornbæk, University of Copenhagen, talks about the future applications varying from everyday interaction with smartphones to learning with computers and designing. He adds that it isn’t just confined to deformation of the screen-shape, instead it wants you to give chance to interact with an object and change its shape mid-air.
This technology could also be coupled with the ultrasound levitation to project the display out of the flat screen. Now a surgeon will have the freedom to work with a virtual brain before operating a real-life brain. Think about the artists and designers who can remold their virtual clay and store it back in their computers. Let’s not forget the musicians- the GHOST Project researchers are working to create interfaces like pads and sponges to help them control speed, timbre and other parameters of EDM.

The good news is that GHOST has already a prototype called “Emerge” that actually works and you can pull out data from bar graphs off the computer screen, as shown above in picture.
The University of Bristol, one of the partners in the GHOST Project has launched a startup named UltraHaptics to develop the technology to create feelings in mid-air using ultrasound.
I came across this technology today and I found it very intriguing. What are your thoughts about the GHOST Project? Share your opinions in comments below.
