New wireless technology uses your body to transmit data

New wireless technology useSan Diego researchers have developed a prototype of their new wireless communication technique that can transmit data through biological tissue outperforming the existing wireless technology.A new wireless communication technique uses human body to transmit magnetic signals

Electrical engineers at the University of California, San Diego, US have demonstrated a new technique “magnetic field human body communication” that outperforms the outstanding technology of Bluetooth which seems to be omnipresent these days,
The wearable technology of present times, such as smart watches, fitness trackers, audio headsets, earphones to name a few, is wireless and uses the technology of Bluetooth for communication.
However, San Diego researchers claim that their new technique can outperform the existing wireless technology and it uses human body to send the data between the devices.
A prototype based on the new technique has been developed by the researchers to demonstrate their exceptionally efficient technology. This prototype comprises of coiled insulated copper wires, which generates the magnetic field, that are wound around the areas of user’s body.

Magnetic field human body communication:

In this new wireless communication technique, a human body acts as a medium for delivering the magnetic energy between the wearable devices which allows free passage of the signals through biological tissue.
According to the researchers, this new wireless communication technology would give best results in case the wearable device is in the form of coils or it is circular in nature. This indicates that the technology is mostly suitable for wearable electronic devices such as fitness brands, smart watches, belts, headbands etc. which are in the form of coil as this helps the technology in better functioning and propagation of the magnetic fields through the biological tissues.
The prototype sends signals between body parts by coiling magnetic field-generating insulated copper wires around three areas of the user’s body.

How does the new technology outperform the existing wireless technology?

More Power efficient in comparison to Bluetooth technology:

Bluetooth devices which are present in the wearable electronic gadgets uses radio signals for data transmission. In fact, radio signals are in the form of electromagnetic radiations which gets blocked by human body or biological tissue thus resulting in ‘path loss’ of the data. Now, the only remedy to make up for this loss is to boost the power of the wearable electronic device so as to push the radio signals.
Ultimately, we can see that Bluetooth devices are not very power efficient. In addition, these wearable gadgets are much smaller and lighter in weight indicating they have smaller batteries and to get the optimum result the wearable device would need additional battery making it bulgier.
On the contrary, researchers say that by using the new wireless technology it is possible to send data via magnetic fields directly through human body thus enormously cutting down on the ‘path loss’. Researchers claim that path loss occurring in ‘magnetic field human body communication’ is much less when compared to that of Bluetooth technology.
It seems the new technology is 10 million times efficient in controlling the path loss when compared to the existing wireless technology indicating that the overall power consumption would also reduce tremendously.
Patrick Mercier, lead author of the study said in a statement: “This technique, to our knowledge, achieves the lowest path losses out of any wireless human body communication system that’s been demonstrated so far. This technique will allow us to build much lower power wearable devices.”
Jiwoong Park, first author of the study and a Ph.D student at the UCSD says: “A problem with wearable devices like smart watches is that they have short operating times because they are limited to using small batteries. With this magnetic field human body communication system, we hope to significantly reduce power consumption as well as how frequently users need to recharge their devices.”

Magnetic energy passing through biological tissue is harmless.

Well, some people may have doubts if it is alright to send magnetic energy through human body.
Researchers believe that wearable devices would use ultra low power when they incorporate the new technology, which in turn would transmit signals of lesser power thus enabling smooth and harmless passage of the magnetic fields through human body. According to researchers the signals would be of much less power when compared to MRI scanners and wireless implant devices.

The new wireless communication technique is much secured.

Researchers believe their technology could be much more secure in comparison to the Bluetooth technology; this technology transmits data in a much wider radius, over several meters and thus is open to potential eavesdropping. Primarily the signals transmitted in magnetic field human body communication would be limited only till that person’s body ensuring there will not be any sort of radiation nor transmission from one body to another and hence it would prevent any sort of eavesdropping.
Limitations:
The ‘magnetic field human body communication’ cannot be used to send data from wearable devices to any remote gadgets, in other words a person cannot communicate or transmit data to another computer. Researchers feel that this limitation might prove to be quite beneficial to some users.
Park, says: “Increased privacy is desirable when you’re using your wearable devices to transmit information about your health.”
Researchers recently presented the details of their study at the 37th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biological Society, in Milan, Italy.

Indian superstitions and the theories behind them: Not to be missed

From breaking mirrors to hanging lemon and chilies, India is a country of diverse culture and tradition, as well as of a lot of superstitions. We see them all around every day. A black cat crosses our path and like a dead statue, we stop and wait for someone else to pass first. The best part about the country is that we continue to practice them even if we know nothing is going to happen. Incredible India? Yes!
Let's look at some of the superstitions in India and the theories behind them:
Hanging lemon and 7 green chilies
It is believed in India that 'Alakshmi', the goddess of misfortune can bring bad luck to the shop owners or business. Since, she likes sour, pungent and hot things, shop owners in India hang lemon and 7 green chilies at their door so that the goddess eat her favourite food, satisfy her hunger and leave without entering the shop.

If a black cat crosses your path, it's a bad omen
Just because they are black cats? Not just in India but this is a popular belief in the west too. The origin of this superstition has come from the Egyptians who believed that black cats were evil creatures and they bring bad luck. In India, black colour is generally associated with the Lord Shani. It is said that if a black cat crosses your path, then you should let somebody else pass before you do. This way, the first person will have all the bad luck and you won't.

Breaking mirror brings bad luck
It is said that in earlier times, mirror used to be very expensive but brittle. To avoid the negligence, the ancient people from Rome started preaching that breaking mirrors will bring you 7 years of bad luck. Why 7 years? This is because Romans believe that it takes 7 years for a life to renew itself. So, the image of a person, who does not have a good health, will break the mirror and after 7 years, his life will renew itself and he'll be in good health.

Twitching of the eye is inauspicious
The superstition is different in different cultures. It is considered good luck in some cultures and bad in some other. It differs according to gender as well. Since it is related to eyes, there are many scientific reasons behind the twitching of the eyes. Eye twitching could be due to stress, alcohol, tiredness, allergies, strain or just dry eyes.

Removing evil eye (Nazar Utaarna)
Putting a little dot of kohl on the side of a child's forehead is very common in India. The practice is called Nazar Utaarna. It is done to protect the little kid from any evil eyes and prevent anyone from putting a negative vibe over the kid. The evil eye can cause severe damage to whom it turns. It is said that putting a black spot on a child's forehead will make the child look ugly to the evil powers and hence, the kid will stay protected.

Adding one rupee to a gift sum
On weddings and special occasions, we Indians generally like to gift money and it won't be 100 or 1,000 but 101 or 1,001. We add one rupee coin to the entire sum. It is considered a blessing, love and luck. But, the main reason to add that extra coin is to make the entire sum an odd number and it will be indivisible, it is good for the married couple. If we don't add one rupee coin, the sum will end in a zero which means 'the end'.

Do not sweep after sunset

Goddess Lakshmi will walk out of your house if you sweep you place after sunset. In a country, where we pray to goddess Lakshmi so that she bestows wealth on us, any idea that leads to her walking out is considered inauspicious. Why sunset? This is because, it is believed that the goddess generally pays a visit after sunset so, if you sweep your place after sunset, she won't come in.

Don't go near a Peepal tree in the night
Peepal is one tree the ghosts like to hover around and if you sleep around a peepal tree at night, the ghosts will kill you. Do you know that plants and living beings keep a balance in nature. In the morning, when the photosynthesis is occurring in them, they absorb carbon dioxide, change it into energy and give out oxygen in the air which we breathe in but in the night, the opposite reaction occurs. At night, plants exhale carbon dioxide while there is lack of sunlight. Animals sleep under trees all the time, why don't we see all of them dead, next morning?

12 year old girl beats Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking’s record in MENSA IQ

Lydia Sebastian, an Indian origin, British schoolgirl has beaten Einstein and Hawking with her exceptional IQ score in the Mensa IQ test which according to her is ‘pretty easy’.A 12 year old girl scores the highest in Mensa IQ test beating Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking!

Lydia Sebastian is a 12 year old school girl; however this young genius has already got some recognition for herself by beating the two most intelligent people ever, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking and scoring 162 in her Mensa IQ test.
A British school girl and from Langham in East Anglia, Lydia appeared for her Mensa paper during her school holidays and had scored the highest possible score in this IQ test. Lydia herself was quite surprised to see her scoring exceptionally well.
Colchester Gazatte’s report mentions that according to Lydia the test was “much easier” than she expected it to be.

What is this Mensa IQ test and why is it so important:

Mensa is considered to be one of the oldest intelligence society in the world and it accepts only those individuals as members who score in the 98th percentile on an IQ test.
Eligibility criteria for any person to get the membership is to score at least 132 or higher.
A member of Mensa requires to pay an annual fee of £55, in the UK, to stay connected with other intelligent members of Mensa through conferences, gatherings and other similar interest.
Lydia appeared for the Mensa test in an examination hall that was located at London’s Birkbeck College and had to answer questions pertaining to language skills and sense of logic. This girl who has just begun her second year at the Colchester County High School for Girls was competing with much older people during this IQ test (Cattrall III B paper).
In all the test had 150 questions with a maximum score of 162, for kids under 18 years of age. Just imagine, Lydia scored a score of 162!
Lydia’s father, Arun Sebastian, hails from Kerala, India and works as a radiologist at  Colchester General Hospital while her mother, Erika Kottiath works with Barclays Bank as an associate director.
Arun said seeing his daughter score the highest possible score on one of the tough IQ test he was “overwhelmed”. He said: “Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking got an IQ of 160. To be honest, I didn’t really believe it.”
Lydia’s parents are very proud of her achievement and they also recalled that she had started to speak when she was only six months old and has been playing violin since the age of 4 which makes them believe she is a gifted child.
At Lydia’s age, most of the kids will not even know what Mensa test is, however Lydia wanted to appear for it for quite some time, recalls her father.
Though Lydia’s affinity is for mathematics she had outperformed the language and reasoning based test.
The overall nature of the questionnaire at the Mensa IQ test is known to be tough making it very difficult to prepare and revise for the same; however Lydia says she gave her ‘best shot’.
As per records, the youngest intelligent member of British Mensa is a two and a half year old kid. This indicates Lydia is not the youngest kid to score exceptionally well in Mensa nonetheless with her score Lydia has definitely made a place for herself in the group of intelligent people.
Lydia says she wants to make her career in mathematics, looking at her spark at the age of 12 she has already made a name for herself and we can expect her developing into another legend in the near future
